Surnom
It is very common for people to be distinguished with a nickname that describes either a personal characteristic or something they did, good or bad, that struck people as noteworthy. In some cases it is something that regularly characterizes the person, while in others it was a one-time thing. Sometimes the nickname follows the name, sometimes it precedes it. For the following nicknames, ‘the’ may or may not be an element. Note: for many nicknames, make sure that it will actually make sense for you as the player. If you personally are short, don’t choose “the tall” unless you can come up with a good justification. You may wish to ask the other players to come up with it after a session or two.
Examples: Bald, Barefoot, Black, Broo-Killer, Belly-Laugh, Clever, Cloud-Son (for an Orlanthi or Helerite), Far-Traveller, Fat, Gentle, Glum (for someone with a high Death rune), Good, Green (for someone with a high Life or Earth rune) Grey-Beard, Hairy, Killer, Laughing, Lucky, Many-Kin, Marsh-Walker, Peace-Maker, Peaceable (for someone with a high Harmony rune), Poet, Raven-Feeder (someone who has killed a lot), Raven-Haired, Quick-Tongue, Quiet, Sad, Short, Storm(y) (for someone with a high Air rune), Strong, Strong-Words, Sweet-Words, Swift, Tall, Troll-Friend, Trouble-Maker, Unadvised, Wolf, X-Bane (where X is someone or something the character has killed), X-Blessed (where X is a god or spirit that favors that character), X-Touched (where X is a god or spirit that is less than ideal).
It is possible to insult someone by giving them a name that denies their nickname or derides them in some way. Examples: Bad, Blackmoor (a very severe insult meaning ‘traitor’), Coward, Drooper/Droopy, Drunk, Eurmal-Friend, Fool, Lack-Sword, Liar, Oath-Breaker, Quarrelsome, Soft-Sword, Trouble, of the Trouble-House, Useless, X-Slayer (where X is something unimpressive or bad to kill like a skunk or one’s kin).
